With support from UK importers Flyfish Europe, Primal has launched the Chromatic, its first venture into the double-handed rod market.

This entry level rod is designed for European anglers targeting salmon and sea-trout.

Advanced Blank Technology

The Chromatic uses high-modulus 55MSI blanks and Primal’s Longitudinal Fibre Alignment process. This aligns carbon fibres along the blank for:

  • Increased sensitivity
  • Improved energy transfer during the cast
  • Faster recovery rates

This technology ensures performance across a wide range of casting situations.

Casting Performance

With a medium-fast action, the Chromatic handles both Scandi and Skagit heads. Its smooth, easy-casting nature makes it accessible to beginners while still rewarding experienced casters.

Components and Build

The rod is built as a four-piece with low-sheen black blanks. Fittings include:

  • Two lined stripping rings
  • Nickel-coloured snake intermediates
  • Black anodised double-nut down-locking reel seat

The handle is crafted from premium cork with composite caps. It feels comfortable, although the top grip could benefit from more shaping.

Models and Warranty

The Chromatic is available in:

  • 12ft 6in, 7wt
  • 13ft, 8wt

It comes supplied with a cloth bag and a robust Cordura tube with a carry strap. Buyers also benefit from Flyfish Europe’s Quick Fix warranty service for added peace of mind.

Verdict

The Primal Chromatic is a strong debut in the double-hander market. Combining advanced blank construction, reliable fittings, and smooth casting performance, it offers excellent value for anglers chasing salmon, sea-trout, and steelhead.
