New leadership at Tay and Spey fishery boards

Two of Scotland’s salmon fishery boards have appointed new management, with Sean Robertson joining the Tay District Salmon Fishery Board as director and Duncan Ferguson taking up the role of manager at Spey Fishery Board.

Mr Robertson brings extensive experience from across Scotland’s fisheries sector. He began his career in 2017 with a summer placement at Spey Fishery Board, assisting with electrofishing work. He subsequently served as science & mitigation officer for the Kyle of Sutherland Fishery Board from 2018 before moving into a managerial role with Fisheries Management Scotland.

The Tay Board said Mr Robertson brings “sound knowledge and understanding of dealing with Marine Scotland, SEPA, NatureScot and the many other agencies that all require engagement”.

Duncan Ferguson steps up after 35 years on the Spey

Meanwhile, Duncan Ferguson has been appointed manager of the Spey Fishery Board after 35 years working on the river, including 31 years with the board as bailiff, head bailiff and operations manager.

Mr Ferguson is respected across the catchment for his practical approach and deep understanding of issues facing wild salmon. He has played a key role in major restoration projects, including the award-winning Allt Lorgy Restoration Project, which saw a 400% increase in juvenile salmon, as well as work at Glenshero and on the River Calder.

Mr Ferguson said: “Everything salmon need starts with cold, clean water. Protecting that, and restoring the habitats they depend on, has to be our priority.”
