Rather than overloading its latest release with unnecessary features, Guideline has taken a more considered approach with its Aura fly reels—what it calls “an exploration into optimised perfection.” Instead of chasing scale, each reel in the Aura range has been carefully refined, with attention paid to weight distribution, finish, spool capacity, and balance for its intended fishing application.

Build and features

Precision CNC-machined from 6061 aircraft-grade aluminium, the Aura reels are built to exacting tolerances, ensuring smooth and reliable performance even under heavy load. A full-frame design prevents thin shooting lines and monofilament leaders from slipping between the spool and frame, enhancing durability and usability on the water.

Large-arbor spools with optimised widths promote even line lay, eliminating stacking and bunching, while a sealed carbon-fibre disc drag system provides consistent and dependable stopping power. Models designed for double-handed rods incorporate a solid line guard, adding weight for improved balance and increasing structural integrity in demanding conditions.

What’s in the range

The Aura range comprises seven reels, covering a wide spectrum of fly fishing disciplines—from light-line river trout fishing and Euro-nymphing techniques to saltwater species and salmon fishing with larger single-handed setups. Machine-grooved aluminium drag and spool knobs ensure excellent grip, even in wet conditions.

Verdict

Whether or not “optimised perfection” has truly been achieved is ultimately for anglers to decide. What is clear, however, is that Guideline has produced a highly refined, well-engineered, and practical fly reel range through a disciplined and thoughtful design process.

Guideline Aura reels, 3/4 to 9/10 single-handed, £299.99-£369.99; 8-10 and 10-12 double-handed, £379.99-£399.99. Euro-nymph, £329.99. Finishes: titan and bronze.
