Patagonia Swiftcurrent Traverse wading pants review

The first thing you notice when pulling on the Swiftcurrent Traverse Pants is the lack of bulk. Compared to traditional chest waders, they feel streamlined and athletic. The articulated legs and gusseted crotch allow for natural movement when scrambling over rocks, navigating brush, or hiking into remote stretches of river.

Patagonia uses a 4-layer H2No® Performance Standard waterproof/breathable shell — the same waterproof technology found in many of their premium waders. The result is a pant that feels light but performs like serious outerwear. Breathability is excellent, especially during long approaches or in humid conditions, helping prevent that swampy feeling common with heavier waders.

The waist-high design reduces material where it’s not needed, cutting weight and improving ventilation. For anglers who rarely wade above mid-thigh in summer conditions, this design makes a lot of sense. I also wear them when fishing my home river for salmon as I never need to wade deep.

An adjustable waistband paired with Patagonia’s SecureStretch belt keeps the fit snug without digging in. The belt design distributes tension evenly and eliminates sagging when pockets are loaded.

Speaking of storage, the drainable stretch pockets are practical and well placed. They hold small essentials without collecting water when submerged. Reinforced scuff guards at the ankles add durability where it matters most — an area constantly abused by gravel, boots, and sharp river rock.

The ankle design is slightly tapered, reducing drag in moving water and creating a clean interface with wading boots.

On the water, the difference between these and full chest waders becomes clear. The lighter weight and reduced upper coverage make a noticeable difference in comfort, especially during long summer sessions.

They excel in:

  • Warm-weather trout fishing
  • Small to mid-size rivers
  • Wet wading alternatives in cooler climates
  • Travel trips where packability matters

Because there’s less material, there’s also less restriction when kneeling, crouching, or climbing. The pants feel technical but not stiff.

Fit is generally true to size, though the cut is more athletic than some traditional wader designs. Anglers between sizes may prefer sizing up for layering flexibility.

The Patagonia Swiftcurrent Traverse Wading Pants represent a thoughtful evolution in wading gear. They’re not simply “shorter waders”, they’re a deliberate solution for anglers who prioritise mobility, breathability, and comfort in appropriate conditions.

For summer trout anglers and minimalist packers, they hit a sweet spot between technical performance and streamlined design. While the price reflects Patagonia’s premium build quality, the durability and versatility make them a long-term investment rather than a seasonal experiment.

In the right setting, they don’t just replace chest waders,  they outperform them.
