Eco-conscious eyewear company Vallon set out to prove that quality and style need not cost the earth
Vallon is a brand that specialises in classic-looking sports sunglasses. Founded by Swedish brothers Marcus and Richard Franck from their time skiing, hiking and cycling in Verbier, Switzerland, the place they call their spiritual home, the brand combines retro styling with a concern for the planet in a range of highly technical yet sympathetically produced eyewear that looks as good as it performs. "Our passion for fishing is rooted in our commitment to preserving the rivers we grew up fishing,” said the brothers. “That's why we set out to create the world’s greatest sustainable fishing sunglasses — the Revivals. Freshwater Revivals (saltwater options are available) are made from recycled nylon fishing nets and fitted with brown-tinted, polarised V52 optics, which give category 3, high sunlight protection for all freshwater sight-fishing situations.
The lenses improve depth perception and enhance contrast in varying light conditions, while the large, semi-wraparound design cuts out ambient light and reflections. Freshwater Revivals also have an anti-scratch, oil- and water-repellent coating and integrated rubber nose pads.
We tried them on river and lake. The matt-coated nylon polyamide frames felt well-made and comfortable without being heavy. The lenses performed well when faced with the open water and harsh reflections of boat fishing and the dappled light of stalking on a stream, providing clarity and contrast in bright and dull conditions.
Welcome extras include a padded carry case with a handy clip-on hook and belt straps, a lifetime warranty, and a company promise that for every pair sold, 1kg of plastic waste is cleaned up and recycled.
