Television presenter Robson Green is supporting a conservation campaign for Aberdeenshire’s River Dee
Television presenter Robson Green is supporting a conservation campaign for Aberdeenshire’s River Dee as the charity behind it seeks to raise funds for restoration work on the threatened salmon river.
Mr Green is backing the River Dee Trust’s Friends of the River Dee appeal, which aims to “build a community championing the wellbeing” of the river while also raising funds for urgent conservation work.
The Dee, which holds Special Area of Conservation status for its Atlantic salmon, otters and freshwater pearl mussels, is increasingly threatened by high temperatures, floods and droughts linked to climate change. “The race is on to ensure its future health and restore its biodiversity,” said Mr Green.
However, engagement officer Claire Fleming said more funding is needed to continue this work: “We are all stakeholders in its wellbeing – and the river needs your urgent help.”
The Friends scheme costs £5 monthly, with members receiving updates about conservation work and having a tree planted in their name. Ms Fleming added that the initiative was designed to be affordable during challenging financial times whilst engaging both local residents and visitors in the river’s wellbeing.
The trust has delivered award-winning restoration projects, planting over 500,000 trees to shade young fish, re-meandering tributaries, restoring wetlands and removing dams. Its education programme reaches over 3,000 children annually.
