Two young instructors at the Royal Deeside fly-fishing school, TwinPeakes, are celebrating major milestones after claiming a world casting title and becoming the youngest qualified instructor in the UK
A Royal Deeside fly-fishing school has marked an exceptional April, with two of its young instructors claiming a world title and a national qualification within the same month.
Blaine Lyon, 23, retained his Spey-O-Rama World Championship title in the Men’s Open, casting 199ft off both shoulders, well above the competitive average of around 160ft. Mr Lyon had already become the youngest winner in both the Spey-O-Rama and World Championships in 2025. His 2026 victory extends that record.
“Competing pushes me beyond expected limitations,” said Mr Lyon. “In the water with a rod in my hand is where I feel most alive.”
Meanwhile, Tom Wood, 22, has become the youngest qualified fly-fishing instructor in the UK after achieving his Scottish Game Angling Instruction Certificate. He joined TwinPeakes just over a year ago.
“I was fortunate to grow up in the Cumbrian countryside. Fly-fishing is a sport I’ve always known and loved,” said Mr Wood. “Teaching others and seeing their confidence grow is incredibly rewarding.”
Alastair and William Peake, founders of TwinPeakes Fly Fishing, commented: “We are deeply proud of them both. Their commitment, professionalism and passion are helping shape the future of fly-fishing, and their success reflects the TwinPeakes ethos of supporting and developing the next generation of talented anglers.”
Based outside Banchory on Royal Deeside, TwinPeakes was established in 2015 and offers casting instruction, guided fishing experiences and international trips to destinations including Chile, Iceland and Norway.
