Newly appointed Wild Trout Trust chairman signals ambitious expansion to meet the mounting challenges facing Britain's wild trout populations
The Wild Trout Trust has appointed Simon Francis as chairman, and his vision for the role signals ambitious expansion to meet the mounting challenges facing Britain’s wild trout populations.
Mr Francis brings impressive credentials: biological sciences degree from Exeter University, senior leadership at Saatchi & Saatchi and Dentsu, and founder of global consultancy Flock Associates. But it’s his hands-on conservation experience as a qualified STANIC instructor and habitat restoration volunteer that gives weight to his ambitious plans.
“The Wild Trout Trust must rise to the scale of the challenges trout face – becoming bigger, bolder, and braver,” Mr Francis told Trout & Salmon. “We will grow and diversify funding, deepen partnerships and engage members through more participative events. At the same time, we’ll expand commercial collaborations and inspire the next generation to lead hands-on river restoration.”
The Trust has built formidable momentum, completing over 200 advisory visits and 95 restoration projects last year alone. Mr Francis thanked his predecessor Dr Graham Coley, who served for more than 20 years: “I want to thank Graham for his leadership – he steered the Trust through Covid and helped shape it into the strong charity it is today.”
Director Shaun Leonard welcomed the next phase of the Trust: “We’re excited to continue with our expert advice and practical projects, and to make more noise about why everyone should care for – and about – wild trout.”
