When temperatures rise and water levels fall, salmon anglers should think about turning to tapered leaders and light switch rods for a more delicate approach

Japanese tackle manufacturer Varivas has launched a range of innovative tapered leaders specifically profiled for use with double-handed rods. The company, well known for producing high-quality saltwater leaders and a wide range of monofilament and fluorocarbon lines, has introduced three ready-to-use monofilament leaders, each tapered to suit different fishing scenarios.

The DH Front Heavy Taper, as the name suggests, features a front-loaded taper designed to turn over larger flies in challenging wind conditions. It is the most powerful of the three leaders and features a sepia green butt section with 5ft of clear tippet.

The DH Spey-Shaped Taper has a longer, more refined front section, providing improved turnover and a more natural swing in low water conditions and when using smaller flies. This leader is finished in a natural green colour, also with 5ft of clear tippet, offering a softer presentation.

The DH Triangle Taper is the all-rounder of the trio, designed for versatility across a wide range of fishing situations, whether spey or overhead casting. It features the same natural green butt section with 5ft of clear tippet.

Varivas DH leaders also incorporate the company’s unique Reverse Taper Smart Connection, which reduces the leader’s diameter at the junction with the fly-line. This allows for smaller knots and reduced friction through the rod guides. Additionally, the leaders benefit from Varivas’ Smooth-Tech coating, which minimises friction and water absorption, enhancing durability and performance.

Each leader has an overall length of 18ft, making them especially suited for use with longer rods and compatible with changeable sink tips. They are available in tippet strengths ranging from -2X (19.5lb) to 3X (7.6lb).

A key element of successful salmon fishing is achieving consistent turnover and correct fly presentation – cast after cast. These leaders are designed to help anglers do exactly that. They’re definitely worth keeping in your pocket for when conditions get tough.
