The Hardy Averon cassette reel comes with two spare spools in a protective neoprene case
Hardy has a proud tradition of producing quality cassette reels and the UDC (Ultra Disc Cassette) was the first choice of our reviewers in the T&S cassette reel test in June 2023. Hardy has now strengthened its offering with a cassette version of its latest Averon reel too.
Bringing a more robust design and innovative features, the Averon is machined from 6061 aluminium bar-stock and boasts an enclosed multi-pad disc-drag, suitable for all freshwater uses. Each reel’s maximum drag pressure is suited to its size, from 4lb on the smallest 4000 model up to 10lb on the 4.76in-diameter 9000.

At the Averon’s core is Hardy’s ultra-reliable CLS locking system with its easy-to-use slide switch engaging locking lugs in the polycarbonate cassette spool, rather than relying on rubber O-rings. As this is the same system used on UDC reels, it means UDC spools are interchangeable with the corresponding size of Averon, a huge plus for anglers who own a UDC cassette reel. It means they can buy the modern Averon without the additional cost of replacing existing spools.
The reel itself is supplied with two additional spools, giving a total of three in a package that makes it a cost-effective way to carry multiple fly-lines.

The Averon has a large-arbor design for fast line retrieval and reduced line memory. The 4000-7000 sizes have a lightweight open-cage design, while the larger 9000 size has an enclosed frame that prevents thin running lines from becoming trapped, while adding strength.
Each reel is supplied with a neoprene case that houses the reel and two spare spools.
