Find out more.Sage’s original Spey reel was widely regarded as one of the most aesthetically pleasing and feature-rich options on the market. It comes as little surprise, then, that with the second generation Spey II, Sage has chosen to refine an already successful formula rather than start anew.
The Spey II retains a minimally ported design, preserving enough weight to balance longer rods. However, it now features a larger arbor to better accommodate bulky skagit and shooting-head lines, while also improving line retrieval. New full-frame line guards eliminate the risk of thin shooting lines slipping between the fully machined 6061-T6 aerospace-grade aluminium spool and frame.
For optimal in-hand balance, the reel foot has been positioned off-centre, aligning the reel’s weight more effectively when mounted on the rod. The spool edges have been given a smooth radius, allowing leaders to be wrapped around the frame for transport and storage without causing kinks.
Internally, the reel retains Sage’s proven SCS drag system, now enhanced with upgraded O-ring seals and a dual-click mechanism. This not only improves reliability and sound but also prevents unwanted spool rotation during casting. The external drag adjustment continues to offer intuitive control via a single-rotation dial, with 20 numbered and detented settings.
With the Spey II, Sage has responded directly to the desires of modern spey-casters — and has ticked every box in the process.
Sage Spey II reel, 3.9in 5/6/7wt, 4.2in 6/7/8wt and 4.6in 8/9/10wt in black, bronze or granite, £549-£575.
