FRON FARM FISHERY

Situated near Aberystwyth, Fron Farm offers excellent fishing facilities, a campsite and four-star B&B accommodation, for keen anglers and families alike. Two trout lakes are fully stocked with rainbow and blue trout and the fishery’s own naturally-bred brown trout.

The fishery maintains a good head of 1.5lb trout and re-stocks regularly. An ample natural food supply ensures good growth rate. Lower Trout Lake is over 20 feet deep, while the Upper Trout Lake is approximately 10 feet deep, deep enough for the trout to remain cool in the warmest weather. The smaller lake of the two, Upper Trout Lake is ideal for novices and the younger angler.

Two coarse fishing lakes are also on-site. The four ponds range in size from one to 2.5 acres. Tackle can be purchased in Aberystwyth, 12 miles away but the fishery has freezer facilities for guests’ catches, keeping them fresh until you leave. The venue has a large car park, and disabled access, so all visitors can enjoy the fishery. For overnight stays or holidays, visitors can relax after a long day in the fishery’s comfortable accommodation: with both camping and centrally-heated bed and breakfast facilities available as well as room for touring caravans. The B&B has WiFi and pets are welcome, subject to prior notice being given. There is an excellent local pub and shop in the village, one and half miles away.

COLDINGHAM LOCH FLY FISHERY

A natural, spring-fed loch in the Scottish Borders which offers 22 acres of superb fly-fishing, as well as holiday accommodation in a stunning coastal location. The only eutrophic (naturally nutrient rich) loch in the Borders, it offers fly-fishing for brown, blue and rainbow trout from bank or boat. There are 10 boats and over a mile of bank fishing, where the gorse has been cut back and paths levelled to improve access.

Wading is allowed for bank fishing and there is now a path right round the loch as well as one floating platform. Blue and rainbow trout averaging more than 2lb and browns from a pound are taken regularly on dries and small nymphs from May onwards. Traditional loch-style methods work well all year and the evening fishing in May and June can produce excellent rises. Buzzer fishing in April and early May produce some fine over-wintered specimens. The Loch is stocked regularly throughout the season with high quality fish averaging over 2lb. Numbers of rods are restricted to ensure that the anglers never feel crowded so booking is recommended.

An anglers’ lodge offers complimentary hot drinks and there is a range of self-catering holiday cottages and cabins scattered around the fishery. One of them is a refurbished Victorian boathouse which sits over the loch and comes with its own boat moored underneath.

MILL FARM TROUT LAKES

A family business established in 1986, Mill Farm lies five miles south of Devizes, between the villages of Worton and Great Chevrell. It offers 12 acres of purpose-built landscaped lakes for fly-fishing in the Wiltshire countryside.

There are two lakes. Kingfisher is for floating lines while Swallow is for floating and sinking line. Both lakes are single-fly only and the fishery’s popularity and limited space means a phone call to check availability is advisable. Each lake is stocked daily from one of the fishery’s own stock ponds, with fish ranging from 2lb to double figures. Car parking is conveniently located adjacent to the lakes, and the on-site tackle shop sells a selection of fishing equipment (including rods, lines, and 60 types of fly including their popular ‘in-house’ Mill Farm Montana) and hot pies, drinks and confectionery. Tackle hire is available and there is also a toilet by the lake.

Free tuition taster sessions with a qualified instructor can be pre-booked. For local anglers, a range of season tickets for all or part of the year is available. The fishery is located approximately a mile from a local village with pub, shop and garage. A small, quiet campsite on a hill provides a tranquil setting with beautiful views across the lakes.
